Michael == AMD Fanboy

February 24th, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

Well Im hardly claiming that Slashdot is an unbiased news source, this quote on the front page directly from Michael is a bit much: “So it looks like the reason Intel was vague about their announcement is that they didnt want the WORLD TO KNOW THAT THEY WERE COPYING AND FOLLOWING AMD rather than developing some new thing on their own. Slashdot is proud to help Intel in this quest; wouldnt want the public to know that INTEL WAS SIMPLY FOLLOWING IN AMDS FOOTSTEPS. Hope this helps.”

Now regardless of your stance in the Intel/AMD Jihad, that quote is a bit much. Yes, he did use that many caps. Ever since JonKatz left, I can always look to Michael to ruin the glory of Slashdot with his shittiness.

Stupid Farking WinXP Installer

February 23rd, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

(I need a Rants topic icon)

Trying to install XP on a system. Very straightforward, boot from CD, format, install, done. Could it be that simple today?! NO! I boot from CD, start the install, it bluescreens. I swap some cards and RAM around, still get a BSOD on the install. Just for the hell of it, I start the install from within Windows (system had Win2K on it). It copies the start files, reboots, and complains it cant find the CD drive.

I swap CD drives, install still cant find it. I check the BIOS, yes, it shows up. I try booting from the CD, it does the initial setup, then says it cant find the CD drive. *curses* Finally got it working by setting the CD drive to primary slave on the same channel as the hard drive. Why this worked I have no idea. Now that XP is installed, the CD drive works fine in its old position of secondary master. *curses*

Lan Party Wrapup

February 23rd, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

Bryan won the Q3 Tournament. Bryan is a rail whore. :)

Well, ok, so you want a more in-depth wrapup. Fine, fine. All told, 12 people showed up – Me, Dave, Bryan, Stevie and his woman, Patrick, Bryan, Eric, Murry, Brandon, and Steve (P) and his woman.

The main focus of the lan was the Q3 Tournament. Read on for the results, or click here for pictures (warning – includes homosexual scene)

1. Bryan
2. Jim
3. Chris
4. Murry
5. Patrick
6. Brandon
7. Dave
8. Eric

Loot for winning was basically a random piece of hardware or computer related junk. Pretty much everyone threw in something, such as blank CD/DVDs, cabling, network cards, hard drives, etc. After the tournament, gaming switched to Diablo 2 and various random things.

There are no processor/memory/storage totals this time. Murry didnt do them.

Windows Source Leak?

February 12th, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

If you’ve been keeping up on any forums, sites, or IRC channels, you know there is a rumor going around about a possible leak of WinNT/2K source code. Microsoft is investigating the claims.

This could be a major blow to open source and to Microsoft. MS, because people may discover new security holes to exploit. And to open source, because if any of this code gets into an open source project, Microsoft will make the SCO lawsuit look like a playground fight. Avoid downloading, because either youre going to be logged, or its a hoax file that is empty (Doom3) or malicious.

New Spyware Spams AIM w/ Fake Osama Story

February 11th, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

If you use AIM, you might have started getting some messages along the lines of “check this out … http://www.wgutv.com/osama_capture.php” from someone who has you on their buddy list. The link will take you to what looks like an official news page with a story about Osama being captured, that asks you to download a player for it.

The player is actually spyware which will pull your AIM buddy list and start spamming everyone on it with that same link. If you read the disclaimer text (the 1pt font in light gray on a white background) it does say its a false story, and the spyware is part of a game.

The parent company is BuddyLinks. This is possibly the most disgusting piece of spyware/spam Ive ever come across, and is an insult to all those who lost loved ones on 9/11.

Cubans Try to Float Buick to Freedom

February 4th, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

(news from his way, her way, My Way)

9 Cubans were intercepted attempting to cross over to the USA in a 1959 Buick which had been converted into a pontoon boat. So yes, you can now truly say that old Buicks are boats. :) The Cubans will be sent back to Cuba, as they did not reach US shores. This same group of Cubans attempted to float a 51 Chevy pickup over last July, but were intercepted.

Now, I might be way off base, but if youre living in Cuba, and you can afford not one but 2 vehicles (broken or otherwise), and you’re smart enough to convert them into boats, then you probably aren’t too bad off in Cuba.

Whitehouse.com Being Sold

February 2nd, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

(from Yahoo News)

Dan Parisi will be selling the domain for the porn site whitehouse.com after all these years. He said that he is worried that his son may be taunted about his dads business. The site was started in 1997, and raked in approximately $1 million yearly according to Parisi.

Nine months ago, President Bush signed a law that bans the use of misleading Web addresses to lure children to view material harmful to minors.

Currently, White House Foods is considering purchasing the domain after they lost a court battle a while back to have the domain name transferred.
