Another Lanparty Success!

June 22nd, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

Well, the lan came and went without any issues related to gaming, other than Chris tripping over a power strip. Gaming started around noon and went until midnight, when the game changed from UT2k4 and Worms to Poker and Blackjack. Card games ended around 3:30AM.

Attendees included: Myself (NinjaPablo), Chris (Justice), Amanda (Serenity), Steve (Xetal), Fran, Bryan (Farnite), Brandon (Byohzzrd), Jill, Murry (Koskun), Patrick (Sardonyx), Jeremy (Korbis), and Aron. There was no tournament.

User-Level Crash Exploit

June 14th, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

(from Slashdot)

An exploit has been discovered which can completely freeze up a linux box. The code does not require root level access to run, just a shell and access to a compiler. The problem appears to be that if you trigger a floating point exception inside a signal handler (specifically SIGALRM), the kernel doesnt handle it correctly, hanging the system. Several kernels are immune to this, mostly from Gentoo, ie 2.4.26-rc3-gentoo: ” I have no idea why this kernel version is safe from this exploit. It just is.” Get the code and patches. This will require a recompile of your kernel to fix.

Nokia Takes Bullet for Hijack Victim

June 9th, 2004 by Jim Olding | No Comments

Korbis briefly writes, “Apparently a cell phone is responsible for thwarting an attempted Hijacking, read about it here.” Neat, but I probably wouldn’t run someone off the road if they were shooting at me.
