The ‘About Damn Time!’ Lan Party

Alright, people have been asking me when the next lan is. We are tenatively going to shoot for mid to late March. No exact date has been set yet. The party is set for March 24th, show up between noon and 2ish.  This will be at Chris’s house as usual.

Because of the timing of this, you can substitute a baby toy for the normal $5 lan fee (Chris & Amanda should have #2 by then). You’ll still need to bring cash to chip in for food if you want any.

All your SmashTech accounts are active. Login and post any dates that would work out best for you. If you forgot your password, and used a fake email address, well, you’re a tard and will need to ICQ me to have it reset.

Please confirm whether or not you will be attending!!

Building an Arcade Cabinet (2.0)

Updated! 9/26/04

A few years ago, I tried putting together an arcade machine. The results were sub-par, but worked for the most part. The unit itself suffered from being wobbly and unpleasant to look at.

Now, as some of you may already know, I have been building a new machine, with the help of Chris and his garage. Read on for more details and pictures.

This new one is a hybrid standing/sitting model. The controls are at about 36″ high, low enough to be played with a chair, and high enough to play standing up. The monitor is a 21″ CRT. I will need to make some adjustments in the back of the cabinet frame to get it to fit properly though.

Each players controls include a 4-way joystick, 6 fire buttons, and a start button. There is also a coin and a reset button. Stereo sound is provided from the top of the unit.

Pictures here (updated 9/26/04)

  • Width: 29″
  • Height: 59″
  • Depth: 24″ (36″ at controls)
  • Material: MDF

Doom 3 System Requirements

Admit it. If you are reading this, you will probably be buying Doom 3. Yes, I said buying. We need to support id on this. They’re one of the few good software companies floating around.

Anyways, start beefing up your systems. Its gonna take a 1.5GHz CPU, GF3, 2GB space, and 384MB RAM for your entry-level D3 experience, which is probably 800×600 with medium-low texture and model details.

My system exceeds this by a fair amount, so I hopefully wont need any further upgrades. How bout the rest of you?

Codename Nintendo DS Announced

Nintendo has announced its next portable system, the Nintendo DS, or Dual Screen. It features dual processors, dual 3″ LCD screens, and possibly wireless integration. In a press release, the company states that this is not designed to replace the GameCube or Gameboy Advance. No word if the screens will be backlit or not.

This is already being called the next Virtual Boy by many pundits, and Im tempted to agree with them. Why buy a new system that cant play your old games? We’re now spoiled by the backwards compatability that the PS2 and GBA gave us. This will flop. Big time.
