The Internet is a Toaster

From the Daily Herald -

House Concurrent Resolution 3 has been introduced in the House.  It wants to seperate the internet into ‘adult’ and ‘family friendly’ zones.  What it really boils down to is allowing/disallowing porn on certain ports.  For example, Port 80 (HTTP) would be family-friendly only, and port 3284 (or some other random port) would be for porn.

The CP80 Internet Channel Initiative is playing a part in the drafting of this legislation.  Matt Yarro of CP80 had this to say about people who don’t think this will work:

“There is this assumption that you can’t control it (the Internet),” Yarro said. “It’s a toaster, we made it, we can fix it. … We can solve the Internet pornography problem tomorrow if we decided to.”

So now instead of tubes, the internet is a toaster.  Great.  Thanks Matt.

PPC6700 as Laptop Dialup

If you have a UTstarcom PPC-6700 phone, Engadget has a good walkthrough for configuring it to act as a modem for your laptop via USB or Bluetooth.  While the instructions provided are for Verizon service, they worked just fine on my Alltel phone.

You will need the drivers from your phone’s CD to get this work.  If you lost the CD, Google for Harrier USB software (or you can get it from here , but you’ll have to register).  The Harrier software can act as a dialer for most CDMA devices.

Administration to launch War on Pr0n

(from the Baltimore Sun)

“Lam Nguyens job is to sit for hours in a chilly, quiet room devoid of any color but gray and look at pornography” Ok, now how many of you just stopped right there and said “Damn, I want that job!” Sure, porn 8 hours a day, with government benefits would be nice…

But Nguyens job is to hunt down the hardcore porn that could be prosecuted under various federal laws. That means that youd be looking at extreme anal insertions, scat/urine fetishes, and amateur Goatse attempts. Just got a whole lot less interesting, huh? (Why am I getting so many more hits now)

No wonder that “the obscenity division has recently set up in-house counseling for them to talk about what theyre seeing and how it is affecting them”.
